Today is Solstice, the Longest Night, and at this time of year - which is both dark and festive, without conflict between them - I have thoughts about the season that are both complex and wonderfully simple.
For me, Solistice / Yule / Christmas / whatever you call it is about remembering that we are all bound on the same journey, and we all face its perils and experience its joys. It is our duty, our purpose, to make that journey better for those around us as well as for ourselves.
Opening up our shut-up hearts, supporting the common welfare, and sharing and fostering love are the reasons for the season. Winter is a deadly time, and nothing helps alleviate that pain and fear like being Present: knowing each other, listening to each other, and caring for one another.
Wrap that in religious trappings if that's what works for you; leave it as is to guide your choices if that is easier. Just be good to each other, and to yourselves, however you can manage that.
Peace be with you, and love always.
